Mar Athanasius College, a premier institution of higher education in Kerala, was founded in 1955 at Kothamangalam. The college was guided and its character shaped by a group of visionaries led by its first Association Secretary and Principal Prof. M.P Varghese. It is the first institution in Kerala to be accredited (2002) and reaccredited (2010) at ‘A Grade’ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of UGC. Adjudged as one of the best colleges in Kerala, Mar Athanasius College was also recognized by the University Grants Commission in 2009 as ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ . Apart from being conferred with the Autonomous status by UGC on 29, February 2016, the College has been accredited with an A+ grade in the third cycle of reaccreditation by NAAC and thus inching towards achieving the vision of our founder Secretary Late Prof. M P Varghese that of a Deemed University status to our College
The college is situated in a sprawling composite campus along with its sister institutions, the Mar Athanasius College of Engineering established in the year 1961 and the Mar Athanasius International School established in 1965. Managed by ‘Mar Athanasius College Association’, these institutions have a long tradition of imparting value-based holistic education to many generations of students in the Central Travancore region of the state. Together, they have more than 5000 students in their rolls and staff strength of 500.
The college offers sixteen postgraduate courses, in Arts - English, Economics, History, Sociology, in Science - Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Actuarial Science and in Commerce - M.Com (Finance), M.Com (International Business). It has thirteen degree courses - six in Science, five in Arts and two in Commerce. The college has four ‘Regional University Research Centres’, offering Ph.D, in English, Economics, Physics and Chemistry. Spread over its Science, Commerce, Arts and Humanity streams, both in aided and self-finance, the college has a total student strength of around 1800, faculty strength of 102 and non-teaching staff strength of 64.
The college has excellent infrastructure facilities such as well-equipped laboratories, research centres, five-storied fully automated library, air-conditioned seminar and conference halls, non-resident students’ centre, ladies’ hostels, instrument maintenance facility, network resource centre, computer centres with internet access, smart class rooms, sophisticated instrumentation centre, multipurpose indoor stadium, swimming pool, indoor shooting range, 400 mtrs. athletic track, football field, fitness centre, waste water treatment plant, reprographic center, audio-visual hall, and canteen for staff and students.
Besides winning ranks continuously in university examinations, Mar Athanasius College received several awards at national and state level. Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, has selected the college under its ‘FIST Program’ to strengthen teaching and research facilities in all its Science Departments. The college won the ‘Palathully Award’ for the best college in the state, instituted by The Malayala Manorama, for undertaking eco-friendly activities and rain water harvesting projects. Mar Athanasius College added one more jewel to its crown by bagging the ‘National Environmental Awareness Award’ instituted by the Khadi and Village Industries Development Agency of India. For its eco-friendly activities undertaken in and around the campus, Mar Athanasius College received the Bhoomimithra Award instituted by the Paristhythi Samrakshana Sangham (Aluva) and the Green Award instituted by the Kerala Biodiversity Board. Mar Athanasius College was selected as one among the best ten colleges in Kerala by a committee consisting of the Vice-Chancellors of Mahatma Gandhi, Kannur and Kerala Universities in 2002.
Mar Athanasius College, the flagship institution of ‘M A College Association’, has always been under the divine light of Saint Eldo Mar Baselious and the blessings of His Holiness Paulose Mar Athanasius, the Patron Saint of our College. The college has now entered the 60th year of its glorious service to the Nation.
